What is Rough?
An independent magazine for the creative and curious. It celebrates and appreciates everything created by the artist and their unique and unexpected creative process.
Inspiration
The concept of this magazine was kindled from observing people's interest in watching 'in the process' videos and BTS or 'behind the scenes' trends on various social media platforms. Viewing artisits' processes has become just as important and inspiring as the final work. Thus, I wanted to create a physical platform that captures the Behind the Scenes in themes (the issues) and can be preserved.
Rough values the creator's view and their personal approach. This is reflected in an important feature in the magazine: artist statements. Artist statements appear in every article on artists and it allows the reader to understand the content and the overall message.
Articles are differentiated based on the length of reading. Longer articles tend to have full spread openings which express the style of art featured in the content, while shorter articles have a one-page opening that highlights the artist's statement as well as the visual style of the artist.

Series design
Each issue would cover a specific art style and/or form such as portraits, however, this will not be limited to the conventional definition and parameter of that art style.

As an independent magazine, it was important to think of stakeholders and how I can pitch this idea to potential investors. After visiting MagCulture and meeting the founder Jeremy Leslie, I came to the decision that pitching the idea for Rough through a presentation would be an appropriate approach. I have designed a series of slides that summarise the magazine, why it is important and would meet a gap in the market, its audience, price and promotional strategies.
